It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Father Damien Grimes, a beloved educator, missionary, and mentor, who devoted a significant part of his life to teaching in Uganda. Father Grimes passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 5th, 2024, at the age of 93 in his home country, UK. Born in 1931 in Liverpool, England, he made Uganda his home in 1959 and spent 41 years serving with the Mill Hill Missionaries (MIM).
Father Grimes arrived in Uganda several decades ago, dedicating himself to the education and spiritual growth of young minds. His work at institutions such as Namilyango College and Namasagali College left an indelible mark on countless lives. His decision to move between schools created a ripple effect that significantly shaped the educational landscape of Uganda. In his classroom, students received more than academic instruction—they were also taught the values of kindness, hard work, and integrity.
Renowned for his unique ability to connect with students, especially those facing challenges, Father Grimes helped many realize their potential and overcome obstacles. His influence extended beyond the classroom, touching many through his humility, patience, and unwavering dedication to nurturing young people.
More than an educator, Father Grimes was a spiritual guide who lived his faith through every action. His presence provided comfort and joy, whether through a kind word in times of difficulty or shared moments of celebration. His life was a testament to strength, service, and love for others.
Although Father Grimes’ earthly journey has ended, his legacy endures in the hearts of those he inspired. His memory will be cherished by the numerous students, colleagues, and friends whose lives he deeply touched.
May he rest in eternal peace.

Fr Grimes was not only a mentor to his students, he was the same for those who had the fortune to be one of his teachers. I, Sally Cox, taught at Namasagali from 1977- 1980. Father was a truly wonderful man, with an often mischievous, outlook on life. Our lives at Namasagali were never dull. There are so many tales to tell, to many to write here. Just to say: go well Father & thankyou for inspiring me & others. Would love to hear from anyone who also remembers those happy years.
Father Grimes was a dedicated priest, teacher and father to all of us. Sadly missed, greatly appreciated for the sacrifice he made in promoting good education in Uganda.Thank you the Mill Hill Missionaries that send him to gift us with his talents.May your soul rest peacefully.Perpetual light shine upon you .Till we meet again!
